Summer Hydration Tips!
By Samya Osman
When the temperatures rise, we all hear the same advice: “Drink more water!” And yes—hydration is essential for so many things- metaboism, energy, digestion, body temperature and even mood! Just a little dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and brain fog.
And while water is key, proper hydration is about balancing fluids and electrolytes, staying ahead of dehydration, and knowing what works for your body. Here are some tips on how to stay truly hydrated this summer:
1. Eat Your Water
Fruits and veggies like cucumber, watermelon, and berries are over 90% water. Snack on a fruit plate, add greens to meals, or blend a hydrating smoothie.
2. Don’t Fear Salt (The Right Kind)
You lose sodium through sweat, especially in hot weather. A small pinch of sea salt in meals—or in a DIY electrolyte drink—can help your body absorb fluids better.
3. Try Natural Electrolyte Drinks
Coconut water, herbal teas, or water infused with fruit and herbs are tasty ways to stay hydrated. Try lemon and mint, or cucumber and basil.
DIY electrolyte tip: Mix water, lemon juice, sea salt, and a touch of honey.
4. Balance Caffeine and Alcohol
Coffee and alcohol have a diuretic effect, meaning they can contribute to fluid loss. You don’t have to avoid them entirely, but it’s important to be mindful of your intake. If you do indulge, balance it out by drinking extra water before and after to stay properly hydrated.
5. Check Your Hydration Clues
Your body gives you helpful feedback:
Pale yellow urine = well hydrated
Dry lips or fatigue = time to drink
Feeling thirsty = you're already behind
6. Spread It Out
Start your morning with 1–2 cups of water
Add hydrating foods and drinks with meals
Keep a water bottle with you and hydrate consistently
Bottom Line
Hydration isn’t just about drinking more water—it’s about supporting your body with fluids, electrolytes, and real food throughout the day. These small shifts can keep you clear-headed, energized, and feeling your best all summer!
